Michigan time zone

Michigan runs on Eastern Time, except four Upper Peninsula counties on the Wisconsin border – Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee – which keep Central Time, one hour behind.

Which Michigan counties are on Central Time?

Exactly four of Michigan's 83 counties use Central Time, all of them in the western Upper Peninsula (UP) along the Wisconsin line. The federal boundary in 49 CFR §71.5(a) traces the outer edges of Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties and places them in the Central zone. Everything else – the other 11 UP counties and the entire Lower Peninsula – is on Eastern Time, the same clock as the live Eastern Time clock on our homepage.

The line is not a straight north–south cut. Ontonagon County, Gogebic's neighbour on Lake Superior, stays on Eastern Time even though the village of Ontonagon lies farther west than Crystal Falls or Iron River. Houghton, home of Michigan Tech, lies west of Iron Mountain yet keeps Eastern Time. The boundary follows county lines and local ties, not longitude, a pattern explained on our time zone boundaries guide.

Why do four Upper Peninsula counties use Central Time?

Because their daily life faces Wisconsin, not Lansing. The four counties share a long river border with Wisconsin and several of their towns are halves of cross-border pairs: Menominee sits across the Menominee River from Marinette, Iron Mountain and Kingsford sit a few miles up the Menominee River from Niagara, Wisconsin, and Ironwood faces Hurley across the Montreal River. Shoppers, hospital patients and shift workers cross the state line every day, and Green Bay is the nearest large city, while Detroit is more than 400 miles away by road. Sharing Wisconsin's clock keeps store hours, school schedules and work shifts aligned.

The arrangement became official in 1973. After Michigan voters approved daylight saving time in 1972, the four counties asked the US Department of Transportation, which has set time zone boundaries since 1967, to put them in the Central zone. The change took effect in late April 1973, and the county-line boundary has stayed the same since. The tz database records the area under its own identifier, America/Menominee, because its history differs from Detroit's.

When did Michigan switch to Eastern Time?

Michigan began on Central Time and moved east in stages. Most of the turmoil came from daylight saving time rather than the zone itself:

  1. 1885: Michigan adopted Central Standard Time statewide, following the railroads' new standard time.
  2. 1915: Detroit moved its clocks to Eastern Time to match New York and the eastern business world.
  3. 1931–1936: The legislature voted in 1931 to put the state on Eastern Time; the Interstate Commerce Commission, then in charge of time zones, eventually moved the Lower Peninsula into the Eastern zone while the Upper Peninsula stayed Central.
  4. 1967: Under the new federal Uniform Time Act, the legislature exempted Michigan from daylight saving time. Supporters of "fast time" forced a referendum, which suspended the exemption, so Michigan observed DST in 1967 and 1968 anyway – starting only on June 14 in 1967.
  5. November 1968: Voters upheld the exemption by fewer than 500 votes out of roughly 2.8 million. From 1969 to 1972 Michigan, including the UP, stayed on EST all year.
  6. November 1972: Proposal A restored DST, 1,754,887 votes to 1,460,724, starting in 1973.
  7. 1973: Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties moved to Central Time.

The Indiana time zone story follows a similar plot: a state at the western edge of Eastern Time, long fights over daylight saving time, and a few counties that chose their neighbours' clock. For the national background, see the history of Eastern Time.

How late does the sun set in Michigan's Upper Peninsula?

Very late, because the UP is far west for Eastern Time. Clock time in the Eastern zone is set by the 75th meridian, which runs near Philadelphia. Marquette sits at 87.4°W, more than 12° farther west, so the sun reaches its highest point about 50 minutes after it does on the meridian: around 12:48 PM EST in late December and 1:51 PM EDT at the June solstice, when sunset comes at about 9:46 PM. In Ontonagon, solar noon at the June solstice falls at 1:59 PM EDT and the sun sets around 9:55 PM.

The Central Time counties sit almost exactly where their clock expects. Ironwood, at 90.15°W, is practically on the 90th meridian that defines Central Time, so its winter solar noon is 11:59 AM CST. The trade-off for the Eastern UP is dark winter mornings: Marquette's sunrise on December 21 is about 8:31 AM EST.

What changes when you cross the time line in Michigan?

Driving west on US-2 from Escanaba, your clock drops an hour when you enter Menominee County; heading north from Iron Mountain toward Marquette, it jumps an hour ahead at the Dickinson–Marquette county line. Appointments, flight times and store hours in the western UP are quoted in local time, so "9:00" in Iron Mountain is 10:00 in Escanaba.

Both zones observe daylight saving time on the same Sundays – the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November – so the one-hour gap holds all year. Frequently asked questions

Is Detroit on Eastern or Central Time?

Detroit is on Eastern Time: EST (UTC−5) in winter and EDT (UTC−4) in summer. The whole Lower Peninsula uses Eastern Time; only four western Upper Peninsula counties use Central Time.

What time zone are Mackinac Island and Sault Ste. Marie in?

Both are on Eastern Time. Mackinac Island, St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie are in the eastern Upper Peninsula, which keeps the same clock as Detroit. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, across the St. Marys River, is on Eastern Time too.

Do Michigan's two time zones change clocks at the same moment?

No. Each zone switches at 2:00 AM local time, so the Eastern part changes one hour before the Central counties. In March there is one hour when the two parts are two hours apart; in November there is one hour when they show the same time.

Which IANA time zone IDs cover Michigan?

America/Detroit covers the Eastern Time part of Michigan and America/Menominee covers Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties. Today they follow the same rules as America/New_York and America/Chicago; the separate IDs exist because their histories differ.

Is Michigan going to stop changing its clocks?

Not under current law. As of late 2026 Michigan follows the federal schedule. The federal Sunshine Protection Act (H.R. 139), which would make daylight time permanent nationwide with a state opt-out, passed the House 308–117 on July 14, 2026, but the Senate has not voted on it, and no Michigan law ending the switch has been enacted.
