How many hours behind Eastern Time is Pacific Time?

Three hours, on every ordinary day of the year. The Pacific zone runs on UTC−8 in winter (Pacific Standard Time, PST) and UTC−7 in summer (Pacific Daylight Time, PDT). Eastern Time uses UTC−5 (EST) and UTC−4 (EDT). Every US state that observes daylight saving time follows the same federal calendar – second Sunday in March to first Sunday in November – so the two coasts spring forward and fall back on the same night and the pairs never mix during the day:

  • November to March: EST (UTC−5) vs PST (UTC−8) = 3 hours.
  • March to November: EDT (UTC−4) vs PDT (UTC−7) = 3 hours.

To convert, subtract three hours from the Eastern time; to go west to east, add three. The clocks at the top of this page show the current pair; the live Eastern Time clock adds seconds and a countdown to the next change.

"10 AM PST" in July is technically wrong – that season is PDT. ET and PT are correct in every season; the UTC offset guide explains how the minus signs are counted.

Standard-time meridians: Pacific 120°W, Mountain 105°W, Central 90°W, Eastern 75°W. The coasts are 45 degrees, or 3 hours, apart. 45° of longitude ÷ 15° per hour = 3 hours 120°W105°W90°W75°W PTMTCTET UTC−8UTC−7UTC−6UTC−5 Los Angeles 118°WNew York 74°W
Each standard zone is centred on a multiple of 15°; the coasts are three steps apart.

Why are the two coasts exactly 3 hours apart?

The Earth turns 360° in 24 hours, or 15° per hour, so the standard zones were drawn around meridians that are multiples of 15°. Eastern Standard Time is the mean solar time of 75°W, a line that runs just east of Philadelphia. Pacific Standard Time is the mean solar time of 120°W, the meridian California's 1850 constitution set as its eastern border north of Lake Tahoe. 120 − 75 = 45 degrees, and 45 ÷ 15 = 3 hours. The same arithmetic puts Mountain Time on 105°W and Central Time on 90°W, which is why Mountain Time is 2 hours behind ET and Central Time 1 hour behind.

American railroads adopted these zones on November 18, 1883, replacing dozens of local railroad times, and the Standard Time Act of 1918 made them federal law. Because the big cities on both coasts sit close to their zone's meridian, the clock tracks the sun well on each side. On January 15, 2027 the sun is highest at 12:05 PM in New York and 12:02 PM in Los Angeles. Seattle, more than 2° west of 120°W, has to wait until 12:19 PM.

EST to PST time conversion table

Because both zones change on the same dates, this table works all year: in summer, read EDT for EST and PDT for PST. Eastern times before 3:00 AM fall on the previous calendar day in Pacific Time.

What happens to the 3-hour gap when the clocks change?

Daylight saving time begins and ends at 2:00 AM local time in each zone, not at one instant across the country. Eastern Time switches first and Pacific Time three hours later, so for three hours on each transition night the coasts are on different halves of the rule:

  • Spring: New York moves to EDT at 07:00 UTC while Los Angeles stays on PST until 10:00 UTC. For those three hours the gap is 4 hours.
  • Autumn: New York returns to EST at 06:00 UTC while Los Angeles stays on PDT until 09:00 UTC. For those three hours the gap is 2 hours.

The windows fall overnight, so they never touch office hours, but they do catch scheduled jobs. A backup scheduled for 12:30 AM PT normally runs at 3:30 AM ET; on March 14, 2027 it runs at 4:30 AM ET and on November 7, 2027 at 2:30 AM ET. Systems that must stay in lockstep are usually scheduled in UTC, as explained on the EST to UTC page.

What is the best time for an East Coast–West Coast meeting?

With a 9-to-5 day on both coasts, the overlap is five hours: 12:00 PM–5:00 PM ET, which is 9:00 AM–2:00 PM PT. In practice it is shorter, because the East Coast lunch hour lands at 9:00 AM Pacific and the West Coast lunch hour lands at 3:00–4:00 PM Eastern. The most reliable slot is 1:00–3:00 PM ET (10:00 AM–12:00 PM PT): both sides are settled in and nobody is at lunch.

Fixed East Coast schedules land early in the West. The NYSE opening bell at 9:30 AM ET rings at 6:30 AM PT, and the 4:00 PM close is 1:00 PM PT (see stock market hours). TV networks delay the Pacific feed so prime time starts at 8:00 PM on both coasts, but live events such as election-night results air at the same instant everywhere.

Which places use Pacific Time, and which stopped changing clocks?

In the United States, Pacific Time covers California, Washington, nearly all of Nevada and Oregon, and the Idaho Panhandle north of the Salmon River. Most of Malheur County, Oregon, and the city of West Wendover, Nevada, are the exceptions: they keep Mountain Time. All of them still switch between PST and PDT. In Mexico, Baja California (Tijuana) kept US daylight saving dates when the rest of the country dropped DST in 2022.

Canada is now different. British Columbia made its last clock change on March 8, 2026 and has stayed at UTC−7 since, and Yukon has done the same since 2020. From November to March, Vancouver and Whitehorse are therefore only 2 hours behind Eastern Time; from March to November they are 3 hours behind, like Los Angeles.

The Sunshine Protection Act (H.R. 139), which would make daylight saving time permanent nationwide with an opt-out for states, passed the House 308–117 on July 14, 2026. As of November 2026 the Senate has not voted on it, so both coasts keep changing clocks. If it became law, the gap would stay 3 hours as long as both coasts kept daylight time; a Pacific state that opted out would sit 4 hours behind New York.

Frequently asked questions

Is PT the same as PST?

PT (Pacific Time) is the name of the zone. PST, UTC−8, is its winter setting from the first Sunday in November to the second Sunday in March; PDT, UTC−7, applies the rest of the year. A summer time labelled "PST" is technically wrong.

What is 5:00 PM Eastern in Pacific Time?

2:00 PM Pacific on the same day. Subtract three hours in every season: 5:00 PM EST is 2:00 PM PST, and 5:00 PM EDT is 2:00 PM PDT.

What is midnight Eastern Time in Pacific Time?

9:00 PM Pacific on the previous evening. Midnight at the start of Saturday in New York is 9:00 PM on Friday in Los Angeles.

Are Alaska and Hawaii also a fixed number of hours behind Eastern Time?

Alaska is: it is 4 hours behind Eastern Time all year because it changes clocks on the same dates. Hawaii is not. It stays on HST (UTC−10) all year, so Honolulu is 5 hours behind ET in winter and 6 hours behind in summer.

Why do flights from Los Angeles to New York seem to take so long?

Eastbound flights lose three hours on the clock. A 5-hour nonstop that leaves Los Angeles at 10:00 AM PT lands at about 6:00 PM ET. Westbound flights gain the time back: a 6-hour flight leaving New York at 6:00 PM ET arrives around 9:00 PM PT.
